Just as we were packing up to leave the Cedar Lakes lean-to on Sunday morning, the pair of loons swam towards us. So, I unpacked the camera and lens, put it together, and walked down the trail a bit to get a closer shot. Of course, while I walked down the trail they swam right in front of the lean-to, so I missed the best opportunity of the trip. But I got this at least; I like the ripples in his wake and the open bill.

Right around sunset Sunday night at South Lake, this one swam right in front of the lean-to. He swam around by the lean-to for probably an hour, happy to swim back and forth and preen. For the most part the light was terrible for seeing coloration details because the sun was setting behind him/her, but I got a couple ok ones.

Here he had gone off to the side a bit where he wasn't quite so backlit.

And I really liked the light on the lake in this one, even though the loon is just a silhouette.

He did a few wing-flaps too (I've read that loons do this quite frequently, and it's not always after a dive, and my experience bears this out).

This one shows how high out of the water they get when doing their wingflap.

And one of the landscape. This is Mud Lake, the source of the West Canada Creek.
